Job Requirements
Age: 18; Applicants for the Fire Department's original appointment examination must be at least 18 years old on or before the examination date. Individuals who turn 50 on or before the examination date are not eligible for original appointment

Academy Certification:
Not required at time of hire, but preferred
Ohio FF2 prior to end of first year
Prior Experience: Preferred, not required
Necessary Certifications
Must obtain and maintain State of Ohio Fire Fighter Level 1 & 2 Certification within one year of service
Must obtain and maintain EMT basic within first year of service
Must obtain EMT- Paramedic within three (3) of his/her probationary period, as a condition of employment. The City pays for paramedic training for those who are not paramedics upon hire.
Additional Requirements: Physical Ability Testing: Candidates must complete the FireFighter Mile physical exam through National Testing Network.
Hiring Process:
Local Civil Service rules: Applicants for original appointment to the City fire department may receive extra credit for certifications or service as follows:
Firefighter Certification (State of Ohio Emergency Medical Services):
Firefighter 2: 10% credit
Firefighter 1: 5% credit
Only one firefighter certification credit may be applied.
EMT Certification (State of Ohio Emergency Medical Services):
EMT-Basic: 5% credit
EMT-Intermediate: 7.5% credit
EMT-Paramedic: 10% credit
Only one EMT certification credit may be applied.
Part-Time Reserve Firefighter Service:
5% credit for service with the City fire department.
20% for Veterans
All applicants' information—including the City Application, certifications, birth certificate, diploma, and other required documents—must be uploaded through the National Testing Portal. No materials will be accepted at the Van Wert Fire Department or City Building.
